Robert E. Lee letter, 1868.

Letter from General Robert E. Lee, Lexington, Va., in reply to a request from a 10-year-old girl, Miss Sadie Napiers, San Antonio, Tex., collecting large ornamental buttons as a hobby. Lee states that he is enclosing a button cut from his coat worn during the Civil War. A memorandum, apparently written by the granddaughter of Mrs. Sadie Napiers Paschal, explains why her grandmother requested the button.

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870. Lee spent the first twenty-three years of his military career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
